Dr Stephen McWilliams is a consultant general adult psychiatrist at St John of God Hospital and Associate Clinical Professor at the School of Medicine and Medical Sciences, University College Dublin. He is Clinical Lead for the St John of God Hospital Psychosis Programme, in addition to treating a wide range of other general adult psychiatric disorders. He has over 20 years’ experience in the field of psychiatry, and has contributed widely to print media including the Irish Times, the Journal.ie and the Medical Independent, and also to radio. He is Medical Editor of Hospital Doctor of Ireland.

Dr McWilliams and his team offer a multidisciplinary approach to those experiencing psychosis, depression, mania and other general adult psychiatric disorders. Evidence informed inpatient treatment at the Hospital includes pharmacy, psychology, social work, occupational therapy and specialist nursing, aimed at helping patients and their families to achieve their recovery goals.

Education & Experience:

  • Graduate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (MB, BCh, BAO, LRCPSI).
  • Member of the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland (MCPsychI).
  • Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in London (FRCPsych).
  • Master's degree in medical education (MMEd), University of Dundee.
  • Doctorate of medicine (MD), University College Dublin.
  • Appointed consultant psychiatrist at St John of God Hospital in 2011.

Research & Awards:

Dr McWilliams has published extensively in international peer-reviewed journals that include European Psychiatry, Schizophrenia Research, Early Intervention in Psychiatry, the BMJ Open, the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology, the International Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and the International Journal of Biometeorology. He is on the Editorial Board of the Irish Journal of Psychological Medicine. To date, he has authored or co-authored more than 320 general and academic publications including four books and several additional book contributions on psychiatry and other topics.
