Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS)

What is rTMS?

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is a safe, non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. This advanced therapy is particularly effective for individuals with treatment-resistant depression and is offered as part of our consultant-led outpatient mental health services.

By promoting neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to form new connections—rTMS helps improve mood and mental health. rTMS is designed for individuals whose depression has not responded to traditional treatments, such as medication or psychotherapy. A referral from a GP or psychiatrist is required to ensure coordinated care throughout the process.

During treatment, gentle magnetic pulses are delivered to the prefrontal cortex, stimulating underactive brain areas responsible for mood regulation. Each session lasts approximately 30 minutes and is conducted daily (Monday to Friday) over 4–6 weeks. Our specialist team will assess your suitability for rTMS, explain the process, and answer any questions before treatment begins. Regular follow-ups will monitor your progress and provide ongoing support.

Patients can resume normal activities immediately after treatment, including work, driving, and eating.

This service is delivered by a consultant-led multidisciplinary team with extensive experience in outpatient mental health care. Studies show that approximately 50% of individuals with treatment-resistant depression experience significant symptom relief through rTMS. (Source: Carpenter et al., 2012)

Side effects are typically mild and temporary, including scalp discomfort, temporary headaches, or fatigue that decreases with continued treatment. Severe complications, such as seizures, are extremely rare (less than 0.002%).
