At St John of God Hospital, we believe that physical wellness is a key component of mental health recovery and overall well-being. Our hospital gym, overseen by our dedicated instructor Morgan Flynn, is more than just a space for exercise—it is a supportive environment where patients of all fitness levels can strengthen both their body and mind. With tailored sessions that prioritize personal comfort and goals, Morgan and the team ensure that each individual feels empowered and confident, whether they are seasoned gym-goers or new to exercise. Discover how our gym can be an essential part of your recovery journey, offering a safe, supervised space where you can build strength, boost confidence, and improve your mental health through fitness.
The Gym!
The gym is a space for people of all ages, fitness, and experience levels to move their body and exercise in a way that suits their needs physically and mentally. There is no pressure to use every machine, lift heavy weights, or even do a particular exercise that you don’t want to do (burpees!). You decide what you want to do within the gym sessions and move at your own pace and what feels comfortable to you.
The gym is always supervised, with help, guidance, and encouragement provided from the instructor if or when needed. It’s a valuable resource for people that love the gym and exercise, but it also caters to people who have little to no experience in this domain and want to become more confident using equipment in the gym, or get back into the gym if they stopped. They can come away with a new method to incorporate into their daily routine for their health and well-being.
The benefits of exercise and using the gym, regardless of ability or experience, can help promote the development of new skills, which can lead to a boost in confidence and give oneself a great sense of achievement. The ability to not only be strong but feel strong does wonders for your mental health.
